General Chart of the Variation of the Compass(1701年)として発表された。

Edmond Halley
Edmond Halley: - The (English October 29, 1656 Edmond Halley  1 . 14 . 1742) of the British astronomer, geophysicist, mathematician, meteorologist, physicist. First, is known for scientific performance of many orbital calculation of Halley's Comet.

Halley was born as a child of a wealthy soap manufacturer Haggasuton of London. Studied at St. Paul School, was admitted to Queen's College, Oxford University in 1673. I have published a paper on sunspots and the solar system while in school.

Visit the St. Helena Island in the south Atlantic Ocean for graduated from Oxford University in 1676, to study the star of the Southern Hemisphere, we observed up to November 1678. The next in 1679, to announce it was recorded in detail the star of 341 pieces visible from the Southern Hemisphere "southern sky star Sheet" (Catalogus Stellarum Australium) returned to England. Performance of Halley that added the star of the southern sky of these star map of existing, was appreciated as arranged in the observational data of Tycho Brahe. And a master's degree at Oxford University, he was recommended to the Royal Society member.

Halley married in 1682, I established a residence in Islington, north London. This time Halley had been spent on the observation of the month most of the time, but I was also interested in the problem of gravity. there was that one of the problems he was interested, to prove Kepler's laws of planetary motion. He was subjected to discussion to visit the Isaac Newton to Cambridge University in August 1684. He learned that Newton has proved this problem already, but not yet announced in the seat. Halley persuaded Newton to announce this achievement, "the mathematical principles of natural philosophy" (Principia) was written in response to this. However, (it is said that it had spent on books that did not sell at all) it becomes the financial difficulties Become a time when the Royal Society, which has been committed to the original publication, published since, this book bear the expenses Halley forced It was published in the form of self-publishing.

Halley published a map and papers on monsoon and trade winds are the result of the second era of the expedition in 1686. He noted that the solar heat is the source of air movement in this paper. I revealed for the first time the relationship between the pressure and height above sea level he also.

Based on the record of Breslau Germany was known by he published a paper on the life annuity in 1693, in this, has left a detailed death records of residents (now Poland), statistics of age at death I did the analysis. The British government has made it possible to supply the pension service at the right price in accordance with the age of the purchaser by this. This study of Halley had a strong influence on the development of Actuarial Science. Creating a life table of this Breslau by Halley was something following the pioneering work of John Grant, but is considered an important event in the history of demographic today.

Halley, devised a diving bell as equipment that can be active for a longer time than before in water in 1690. The window is mounted to perform like the exploratory activity in water in the diving bell, air was mechanism for delivering the water to put the barrels putting a weight.

Halley was appointed captain of Paramore issue of the Royal Navy in 1698, and subjected to a wide range of geomagnetic observation. The carry out this mission over two years, he was subjected to observation by the voyage to 52 degrees south latitude 52 degrees north latitude from the Atlantic Ocean. The result was announced General Chart of the Variation of the Compass as (1701). This is a view of geomagnetism was published for the first time, it was like charts that argument line called line of Halley also (Halleyan lines) were drawn for the first time now.

Named the Saville geometry professor of the University of Oxford in November 1703, and received a Doctor of Laws, honoris causa in 1710. Announced Synopsis Astronomia Cometicae that by using a technique of ancient astronomy, wrote a prophecy about the famous Halley's Comet (the "comet astronomy Introduction") in 1705. This is what the comet Halley himself had observed in 1682, a comparison was made of the orbit of the great comet of the past such as Kepler has observed. In this book, comet that appeared in 1456, 1531, 1607, and 1682 is the same celestial body, Halley was predicted to be a regression in 1758 is next. Halley himself died at the age of 85 without having to wait for this regression, but as prophecy of comet was discovered, this comet was decided called (Halley's Comet) Halley's Comet by this. Halley's Comet, was also a case of celestial bodies revolve solar system on the planet other than has been confirmed for the first time.

In 1716 it was proposed that can be determined with high accuracy (AU) between the Earth and Sun With that the starting and ending times differ in different observation point during the day surface passage of Venus. Sun surface of Venus passing itself had been observed in 1639, but its importance astronomical was as it was pointed out for the first time by Halley. It should be noted that this phenomenon does not occur in life of his observation was actually made it was that of 1769 and 1761.

In comparison with the observed records of ancient Greek era position measurement data of the star, it has been discovered proper motion of the star was considered it to be immobile in 1718.

Held such post (Royal Astronomical officer), and to death Greenwich Astronomer in the footsteps trace of John Flamsteed to Halley in 1720. He is buried in St. Margaret Church in Lee southeast of London.
